Trade Corner

Hi, David here again! This week I will share a tip that can help you be more precise with your search targeting, even without HS codes.

In the trade world, much of our research revolves around HS codes. Rather than dealing in general industries for investment attraction, you’re trying to find suppliers or buyers of specific products or product categories around the world. While HS codes are in the works behind the scenes here, I thought I would show you my favorite trick for more accurate searching using the tools already in the platform. I’m going to use the example of searching for a potential buyer/importer abroad today.

I begin by looking up the HTS code of the product that my target companies are producing - note, instead of looking for the HTS code of the product I want to sell, I will look up the HTS codes of end products of my prospects. This works best in a B2B situation, but even for an ag equipment manufacturer, they can still find the HTS code of the crops that their buyers will use their equipment to produce. 6 digit HS is sufficient, but a 10 digit code can refine your search, if necessary.

Once I have these HS codes, I’ll do a quick google search for which NAICS codes produce each given HTS code (my literal search term is “which NAICS produce HS ######”). Usually, several good quality crossover results will show up. I’ll compare these sources and select the NAICS that seems to fit best. Congratulations, I have now just chosen the most likely NAICS for my target.

As an aside: I’ve found that the NAICS to HTS crossover is the most straightforward when you can match them based on the HS code of the produced product, rather than the HS code of the purchased product. This is why it works much better to find the end product of your target prospect, than to use the HS code of the product you want to sell.

Step two (if I want to refine my list) will be to enter the product names/categories of my prospects using the keywords, or custom searches (in the search bar on top) within Gazelle. Again, focusing on my prospects’ end products, (and not mine) is a crucial distinction that makes a big difference in search quality. Our keywords are derived from each company’s website, and our keyword searches are matched to the company descriptions. Companies are not likely to focus on their component purchases in their “about us” page. Rather, they will focus on the product they are making. So, if you search for the end product you can supply components for, rather than your own keywords, your chances of finding the right prospect go much higher.

The results should be a list of companies in the right industry and involved with the right products. You can further refine this list with the filters in Gazelle to prioritize the right locations, sizes, and G. Scores for you.

Let me know if works as well for you as it does for me.

See you next time.
