You can refine your results with the “HAT Query” button in the Map Tile. This allows you to select companies that meet specific geographic criteria. For example, if you’re searching for companies headquartered in Germany with a subsidiary or branch in Georgia, you would follow these steps:

  1. After logging into Gazelle, open the Company Finder

  2. Next, click the green Map tile

  3. Select the “Advanced” button

  4. In the drop-down menu that appears, click the arrow and select “Headquarters in…”

  5. Pull the map towards Europe and select Germany

  6. Next, go back to the drop-down menu and select “Subsidiary or Branch in …”, and select ‘State’ from the options at the top right-hand corner

  7. On the map, choose Georgia

Your search at this point will consist of companies that are headquartered in Germany and present in Georgia, but the locations listed might be outside of those parameters - e.g. the Illinois subsidiary of a company that is also headquartered in Germany and present in Georgia.

If, for instance, you want to look at company locations in Georgia of German-headquartered companies, follow these additional steps:

  1. Select “HAT Query” on the left hand side of the screen.

  2. Filter by Role and select only “Subsidiaries” and “Branches.”

  3. Voila! You have your perfect matches listed.

If the step-by-step guide was unclear, you can also observe how we conduct the search in the gif below:

We’ve covered selecting locations on the Map, but it’s time to get even more in-depth in our location parameters!

The Here-and-There (HAT) query allows you to specify both the roles and locations of the companies in your results. This means you can select multiple locations and determine which company roles you’d like returned, adding a whole new level of customization to your Gazelle searches.Using this feature, you can identify companies located in a particular area, and determine whether or not they have headquarters, subsidiaries or branches in any other specific regions of interest.

Note that we consider this an Advanced Gazelle skill, so if you need any further explanation following this tutorial or would like to run through a couple of live examples, please contact your Customer Success Manager or support@gazelle.ai

You can find this feature by opening the the Map tile of the Company Finder as usual, then clicking the "Advanced" button at the top left. This will open a drop-down menu allowing your to narrow your search by “Headquarters In” and “Subsidiaries/Branches” either “in…” or “not in…” your areas of interest. You can even combine different counties, states/provinces, or countries to get the most customized results possible.

Here are the details:

#1 - A New Direct Flight Opens Up

Let's say you work for an economic development agency for a city in Kentucky whose airport recently secured a direct flight route to and from Los Angeles. You want to see which companies are headquartered in Los Angeles with locations around your area, who might be compelled to take advantage of this new flight.

  1. After logging into Gazelle, open the Company Finder

  2. Click the green Map tile and select the “Advanced” button

  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, click the arrow and select “Headquarters in…”

  4. Navigate towards Los Angeles and select the counties surrounding the city, who are likely to depart from LAX airport.

  5. Next, go back to the drop-down menu select “Subsidiary or  Branch in…”, drag the map over to Kentucky and select the counties surrounding the airport.

  6. Retract the Map tile and you’ll see a list of all the companies headquartered in LA with a subsidiary or branch in your area.

  7. Currently, our search is returning both subsidiaries AND branches, meaning that even if a subsidiary of an LA-based company is listed, its branches (which could be located outside of Kentucky) will also be listed or vice-versa. To only view companies in the area of interest, unselect the “Subsidiary” or "Branch" option in the Role filter, and your results will be narrowed only to companies in the two distinct areas selected

#2 - Targeting a New Area

This time, let's pretend you are based in California and work for an economic development agency serving the state of Victoria in Australia. You want to target high-tech firms from Silicon Valley to Melbourne, and want to attract firms that don’t have a presence in Australia already but may have already expanded into the Asia-Pacific region.

  1. After logging into Gazelle, open the Company Finder

  2. Begin conducting a high-tech search by selecting the purple Keywords tile, choosing “Keyword Categories”, clicking on “Information Technology”, and selecting all the available keywords. This will return companies active in these specific sectors, without being limited by NAICS industrial classifications.

  3. Click the green Map tile and select the “Advanced” button

  4. In the drop-down menu that appears, click the arrow and select “Headquarters in…”

  5. Zoom in on the map to select the counties in the Bay Area of California, for example: Alameda, Solano, Sonoma, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Marin, San Mateo, and Napa.

  6. Now, go back to the drop-down menu and select the “Subsidiary or branch not in …”, zoom out to the country-level, and select Australia.

  7. Finally, select "Subsidiary or branch in...", and click on countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, China, or any other Asian-Pacific country.

  8. Retract the map tile, and the results returned will show all the companies based in the Bay Area, active in cutting-edge ICT, who may be interested in expanding to your area of Australia.

#3 - Mission Planning

Your state recently introduced a new brownfield incentive for manufacturing companies to expand their current operations, and you have been assigned to a mission to attract prospects from German-speaking countries in Europe that already have a presence in your state and might be interested in expanding.

  1. After logging into Gazelle, open the Company Finder

  2. Begin conducting a search for manufacturing companies by selecting the yellow NAICS tile and choosing the 33- level of Manufacturing NAICS codes. This will return companies active in advanced manufacturing.

  3. Next, click the green Map tile and select the “Advanced” button

  4. In the drop-down menu that appears, click the arrow and select “Headquarters in…”

  5. Pull the map towards Europe and select Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

  6. Next, go back to the drop-down menu and select “Subsidiary or Branch in …”, and choose your state

  7. Retract the Map Tile, and the results shown will contain manufacturing companies active in German-speaking countries with a presence in your state who might be looking to expand

Once again, this is considered an Advanced Gazelle skill, so if you require further explanation or would like to run through some examples, simply reach out to the Customer Success team at gazellehelp@lightcast.io. We’re happy to help you out! :)
